Natures New Year Begins with Seeds

The Seeds of the Dandelion

This is considered a menace for landscapers that maintain plush green lawns and flowery decorative gardens. Having said that, this so called weed has so much beauty, from the yellow flowers that turn into furry round clustered seeds that you see a picture above, soon are blown away by the winds to procreate. Soon an unattended yard in a few years is littered with this plant.

It is important to note that every part of this plant has many uses. These days it is sold as greens in the salad isle. It providing us with tons of natural fiber and it is full of vitamins A, B, C and D; it also has some important minerals in it, viz. calcium, iron, potassium and zinc. I have heard that some folks use it in teas. It is believed that this was used by the Native American for various ailments such as heartburn, stomach upsets, kidney disease just to name a few. It is also used in traditional Chinese medicine for woman that breast-feeding.

So now that we know it value I think we as a society should look at this so called weed with new respect and adoration. Instead of shooting it with round-up weed killer to maintain a plush lawn we need to figure out another way than pesticides. These poisons soon find their way into our waters that we eventually consume.

I wouldn’t mind dandelions if they didn’t take over the lawn or garden. I love them in the wild and I know they have uses (if not covered with pesticides.) I dig them out by hand as I do all weeds.

I feel the same way about weeds (Dandelions are a particular favorite), you can eat most weeds, maintaining a well balanced nutritious diet, as well as having and arsenal of traditional meds to us against just about anything. Yet, we find many yards filled with inedible beauty and pesticides to maintain the unattainable. Thankfully, when life pushes its way through the pristinely manicured poisonous lawn, there’s an innocent hearted child nearby with an unblemished awareness that will pick the dandelion, make a wish, and blow the seeds into the the air.
Okay, off to make a cup of Dandelion Tea. 🙂
